“This was the very last song that we finished for the album despite being one of the first I wrote. We went for a driving beat and a New Order style bass line for the album version in the end which was a little different to the original demo. Around the same time as writing this song I saw Martin Scorsese on TV talking about the Rolling Stones and a film that he had just made about them called……..Shine a Light. Phillips, Scorsese, Jagger – Great minds thinking alike there. The Red, White and The Blues phrase features in this song as well.”
Small Talk:
“It’s about realising that there’s a whole big world out there that’s just waiting to be discovered. The ‘Don’t talk to me about the weather, don’t talk to me about last night’s TV......’ lyrics are probably my favourite on the album. I should stress at this point that, in normal social situations, I’m quite happy to discuss precipitation and Corrie.”
Breathe It All In:
“We gave this track a Pink Floyd feel after watching a BBC Three documentary on the band and thought a big epic song on the album would sit nicely between the three minute pop songs. It's kind of experimental and drifts between major and minor keys. By the way, did you know that Pink Floyd all met each other in the slips at a university cricket match? Now that’s rock 'n' roll kids.”
Maybe I:
“This was the very first song I wrote for the album and was the first track we put down on tape at Shabby Road Studios as well. We bunged on a bit of Beatles style keyboard for that summer pop song feel. Typically, the summer will be all but over when the album comes out. Have to hit the Australian market instead I guess, video for MTV on Bondi Beach……God, what a chore.”
